Permissive Paths

A forest with flowers in bloomPermissive Paths are routes which landowners allowed the public to use but which are not themselves public rights of way. Landowners may impose various conditions on how Permissive Paths are used and withdraw the permission at any time; please follow any rules or conditions that may be given on site. Such paths may be provided following an agreement between the Council and the landowner or as part of an Environmental Stewardship Scheme (ESS) administered by Natural England; for information on ESSs please visit the ESS website.

Permissive Paths allow the public to enjoy new areas of the countryside while providing protection to the landowner against the route becoming a public right of way. If you are interested in creating a Permissive Path across land you own, please contact your local Council.
